I installed it, but frankly, I'm so disgusted with the way they destroyed a
great game (the original Col) that I haven't bothered to play it again.
However, it seems the patch does address the major balance issues and bugs
in Col II.

Didn't even know there was one
To be honest, I've not played more than 15 mins of the game anyway,
since buying it on release day. Just don't seem to be able to get into
it at all, despite loving the original.

Is that because they missed the opportunity to do so much more?

I've given it a better hearing - if only because I no longer have the
means of running the original... :p

Must admit I've not tried Col 2 yet. Like you, I can no longer play Col
as it doesn't work under Win XP. Freecol does, and the game play is very
close to the original. Somehow the graphics seem rather wishy-washy
compared with the original, though that might be the rose-tinted
spectacles of memory.
Also seems I forgot just how much the game can drag in the middle
period, when you are building up your proto-nation. Rose-coloured specs
again? Still a good game though.

The gameplay on Col2 is very much like the original - perhaps too much,
which is perhaps part of the problem. They should have paid more
attention to gameplay than flashy graphics.

Yes. In fact, they did *less*than the programmers behind the original game
achieved. The number of turns was reduced to 300, many of the funny items
(such as the Fountain of Youth) were removed, and now you have one single
task from the very first turn: to prepare for rebellion against the king.
That is neither historically accurate nor much fun, compared to the original
game, where you built up your colonies, fought with or found an
accommodation with the Indians and the other colonizing powers, went
exploring, made profitable trade deals with the Indians throughout the game
and had quite a lot of fun before it was time to prepare for independence
and fight the Royal Expeditionary force. Civilization IV Colonization is
more like a scenario than like a true standalone game.
Personally, I would have been quite satisifed with a reissue of the old
game with better graphics and certain annoying bugs removed, as well as
getting rid of those infernal Encircling Dragoons.

Well, they *have* got rid of those in Col II... :p

Slightly OT, but ...
Try dosbox (http://www.dosbox.com/) if you want to play those old dos games
in a XP/Vista environment.
I've not tried it with Col but several other games works fine.
