i have read the paralysing touch attack on page 142.

It has extended duration 3x. an affliction normally has a duration of 1
second + x (roll every second to recover). how do you get from 1 second
+ x (with x most likely <= 10 seconds) to a duration of 3 minutes times
margin of failure with a 3x extended duration enhancement?

is this an error?

No. You need to reread the rules for Affliction in the Characters
book. A no frills Aflliction HAS no duration. The victim gets to make
a HT roll to recover every second, but it will last until the victim
makes that HT roll (so for a really high power affliction, until he
makes a natural 3 or 4). Incapacitating afflictions on the other hand
do have a duration before which you don't get a HT roll, (because
otherwise the enhancement would be worthless since Affliction is
itself incapacitating).
