I downloaded the Fall From Heaven mod because of all the great comments
about it. But I'm wondering whether there's a newer one, because the ReadMe
file kept discussing all the features which were *not* in the mod. (The
phrase "Phase 1" cropped up again and again.)
At any rate, I simply extracted the files and put them into what I *thought*
was the right location, but got a bunch of xml errors when I tried to launch
it. I think the problem is that the mod is supposed to be played with
vanilla Civ IV, but I put it into the BTS folder.
Can anybody confirm that:
(1) There was never a Phase 2 for that mod
(2) The mod is supposed to be played with vanilla Civ IV, which means the
folder should be placed into "Sid Meier's Civilization IV\MODS" rather than
into "Beyond The Sword\MODS"?

There's a version I and version II of Fall from Heaven. I think v.I is
for vanilla Civ IV, patched to a particular level (can't remember which
patch). FFH II is for Beyond The Sword, patched to 3.19.
The most recent version comes as an .exe file, which you just click and
run to install (make sure you're patched up to the proper level first.)
Get it here:

There's a PDF manual here (you're gonna need it -- it's almost a new
game from normal Civ IV):
I started off playing the Grigori who have forsaken the gods, so you
don't need to worry about religion with them. You can play them as a
fighting warrior clan, and not bother too much about magic either, at
least until you get more of an idea of how the FFH world works.

Whew! I started off playing and found myself completely bewildered; I'll
definitely have to read the manual. Thanks again!

Being a bit of an old duffer at these things do I place the downloaded
file in the BTS mods folder and then open it or is there something
else I should do.
I have the latest update for BTS

Yeah -- FFH is quite a learning curve but it's a blast once you get
into it, if you like dark fantasy (very dark!). I would also recommend
browsing the FFH forum on CivFanatics to get an idea of what you're
letting yourself in for

It doesn't matter where you run the downloaded file from -- the desktop,
a temporary folder, anywhere. It behaves like any other Windows install
program and "knows" where to put everything.
There's a full walkthrough of the installation procedure on the FFH
forum on CivFanatics:
Having just read that walkthrough, it looks like you now need to install
an FFH patch as well to work with the latest BTS version 3.19 that came
out in June (I haven't got round to updating 3.17 yet, so didn't need to
patch FFH). Full instructions are in the walkthrough.
Once it's installed, there will be a desktop shortcut to load FFH
directly, or you can run it by opening BTS as normal, then on the
opening menu go: Advanced -> Load a Mod -> Fall from Heaven 2.
