By consulting the hints and using the 'think' command, I've managed to
lurch forward to a fair extent. I believe I've found everything in van
der Wyck's shop, though 'think' still tells me I'm missing some clue
that may be lurking there somewhere. I've looked at a lot of stuff
through the magnifying glass -- no help. I've found the secret room
and told Lucy about Marijne. I seem to have all of the items mentioned
in the hints list as being in the shop, but I haven't been able to
open the display window yet.
I've managed to get trapped by Moore once, went back to a saved game
and talked to him again, so I know about John Dee, but the game tells
me I won't be able to visit Dee until the 19th, and it's only the
17th.
I can't find anything of the slightest interest in the Globe, but I'm
betting I don't need to worry about it until the 22nd.
'think' is also suggesting that I need to talk to someone to learn
Barker's address, but I've talked to Will, Simon, and Moore, none of
whom is helpful on that topic. George has disappeared from the
Mermaid, and the game won't let me knock on Lucy's door. So who else
would I talk to? The warden has nothing to say on the subject, nor do
the guards.

I don't think there's anything of consequence in the display window.
If it's evening on the 17th and you're able to sleep, you should do
that.
Otherwise, you need to find out where van der Wyck might have gone.
Perhaps he left behind a note suggesting his next move?

No, it's still day. I tried going home and sleeping, and the game
wouldn't let me sleep.

No, he didn't. The only note I found was one (in the Dutch books)
written _to_ van der Wyck by Joseph Barker. And that's the only note
listed in the Hints. So I have no idea what you're referring to, or
where I might look for it.
If that's the note you're talking about, then I gather from it that
Joseph is telling Wyck to go kill Shakespeare. But when I go back to
Shakespeare, he's healthy enough, and I don't seem even to be able to
warn him about Wyck. Nor can I show him the note ... though
interestingly, I get a different non-response than the game's standard
non-response. Usually, trying to show anything to anybody defaults to
"Best to hold on to that." But 'show van der wyck note to will' earns
me a "You receive no reply." This rather suggests that in some
circumstances showing that note to Shakespeare might be useful ... but
it's not useful at the moment.

There's a playbill in van der Wyck's bedroom near Barker's note that
advertises the first performance of Hamlet, on the 18th. Examining
that should add a new goal to your THINK command.
Leaving the house after discovering the note and the playbill should
trigger evening.

I had some Shreds questions too:
How do I get the book from John Dee? I searched and searched and searched
and searched -- never found it.
Does anything ever happen if you don't lock the printworks door?
What alternative endings are possible?
No worries on spoilers (except for onlookers, of course) -- I've solved it
(so no need for gentle hints).

It's actually under the trick mirror. Examining the mirror gives a
hint to the effect that it's standing a bit lopsided.
However, if you don't find the Diabolis in Dee's study you can still
get by perfectly well with the information from The Cults of Britain
in Barker's laboratory -- as you evidently did.
> Does anything ever happen if you don't lock the printworks door?
It really shouldn't be possible not to. When going to bed or leaving
the Printworks, Fletcher should do it automatically if you don't do it
for him.
> What alternative endings are possible?
Well, you can save Lucy if you work really quickly in the climax. If
she dies, however, you can still stop the ritual.
If you do save her, you can choose whether to take her as your squeeze
(and, eventually, wife) or tell her to hit the road.

My turn! Only one simple question: what the hell do I have to do in
order to enter the secret room? Am I using the wrong verbs? I'm
playing Release 10.

Mm... can you give me more information? Which secret room? What
exactly is your situation, and what have you been trying to do?

Oh, sorry for that. The secret room inside van der Wyck's shop. The
game doesn't understand "secret room", or "darkness", so I can't just
_enter_ it (or throw the candle inside it). _W_ took me to the other
room. The backboard isn't "something you can enter", and neither is
the cabinet. I gave up and moved on: took the rope/hook back, talked
to George and Simon and slept. Today is January 18.

That gave me trouble too. I think I finally got through by typing either
TOUCH BACKBOARD or OPEN BACKBOARD.

Okay, the game does not understand you referring to a "secret room"
because at this point it Fletcher would not really know for sure that
it's a secret room. This sequence should get you inside:
TOUCH BACKBOARD
X RECESS
TURN CATCH
D (but you'll probably want to have a source of light with you before
doing this)
