In a game some while ago (Noble, Marathon, fractal map), the AI rolled a map
consisting of a big continent with many slinky isthmuses. I started at the
tip of one of the isthmuses, which made expansion rather cumbersome and the
process of R & D even worse. Some of the AI civs exchanged techs like mad
whiel I lagged behind in last palce. Finally, Peter the Great (Peter the
Great!) took pity on me, contacted me and gave me Alphabet (that is
Alpabetm, one of the most valuable techs in the game) with the words: "This
might be your lucky day, Here, take this." That's when I understood that
playing on would be rather pointless. I wish I had for a while, though; I
probably *could* have got quite a few technologies by bartering Alphabet.
Need I say that Peter was top dog in that game?

I hate it when that happens.
I've got a nice continent to work on - but no neighbors. So I am
frantically trying to settle the coast (while whacking the occasional
barbarian camp) before the first explorer/colonist ship arrives.

That's my favourite start. You don't have to worry about early invasions and
you don't have to waste valuable resources on the espionage slider (which I
hate anwyay). And you don't have to train and upgrade a lot of early units.
Of course, building the Great Wall is an extra bonus in a situation like
that.

I managed to get the continent covered, so far. I'm behind on the
tech race, no body to swap techs with. But I'm going to reach a
"quantity has its own quality" point here soon, as the cities grow and
the sheer number just add up.

Yes. If you've got some nice inland cities protected by merely a symbolical
garrison and geared for research and money, you can research wodnerfully
even at 40%.

I think I'm going to have to move the capital to the "other half"
of the continent. Can't sell the forbidden palace, so ... time to
test some theories.

Yep, it's a real pain not being able to sell buildings.
Recently I captured an enemy city that was next to my city which had
Versailles in it.
In the captured city I found I'd got with it a Forbidden palace.
So I ended up with Versailles & Forbidden palace in adjacent cities.
Another time when I have the 3 Gorges dam wonder I get soddin coal plants
and nuke plants in captured cities so bad health and nuke meltdowns.
I never build nuke power plants even if I dont get the 3 G Damm wonder.
Nuke power plants always meltdown sooner or later for me.

I thpught that if yo capture enemy cities with natial Wonders in them, then
the national Wonders automatically disappear.
I also think one should be able to rebuild the Forbidde Palace in some
other city at need, just the way one can do with the original Palace.

Actually I think you're right.
I now recall got the city with the Forbidden Palace in it through the city
revolting and joining my civ and not by capture.

Wow. I can only say wow. And you must have had some pretty stunning culture
to make a city with the FP in it flip. The Forbidden Palace generally
creates oodles of culture and extends the borders.

The AI (Germany - Bismark) had only just built it and presumably it was
built in an attempt to stop the city flipping.
It failed...

That explains it. And of course you can't have built an FP of your own,
because I don't think one can own *two* of them, nice though it would be.

Yes, my general strategy is to build the Versailles wonder on the basis
that if I don't build it someone else will.
I then delay my FP build until late game when I know roughly what area of
the map I'm going to end up with.
On a side note do you ever relocate your main palace?
I've not done so yet but it does seem to be a very cheap way of giving any
city lots of culture and generally your origanal palace city will have
lots of culture so i guess it will be ok once the palace is gone.

The same here. Building the FP too early can be a huge mistake. But then, as
I said, I do think one should be able to relocate it.
> On a side note do you ever relocate your main palace?
I did so for the first time in a recent game, and now I wonder why I never
did it before. I found msyelf on a continent with Saladin and Genghis Khan,.
Not good. So I managed to rush Saladin with warriors, capturing Mecca, then
built axemen and put an end to Genghis Khan; that war lasted for a long
time, but it was worth it. Even so, the cost of that transcontinental
empire almost broke me. I built the main palace in Mecca in the heart of the
continent, then Versailles in Karakorum in the south and then the FP in the
north near my original capital. It all helped me enormously when it came to
getting back on my feet; and because I didn't need to build any new troops
for a long time, I could concentrate on building up my economy and
researching. I ended up winning a space victory.

I am now a firm believer in moving your main palace if you find that your
original one is at the outskirts of your empire. Unless you need it where it
is to generate culture against someone who managed to found a city near your
capital.
