I don't know enough about Jack Toresal yet to decide, for myself, if
it's okay, for me, to pay $25 for it. There have been technical
difficulties with the online demo and I'll have to wait 'til those are
resolved before I can evaluate it for my own tastes.
I have no idea if it's okay for _you_ to do it. The way it works is:
if something (anything) seems worth the price to you, and you have the
money available, then you can buy it, if you want to. Or not.
But on the broader, different question posed in the subject line: heck
yeah. Make it rock my world and I'll pony up appropriately. There's a
lot of IF in the world, but the amount of IF that rocks my world seems
to be _painfully_ finite. In a couple of years, give or take, I'll be
all out unless the supply is boosted, so I'm entirely in favor of
commercial choices being available.
But IF is like any other medium: worthless on its own, a blank spot
with no intrinsic value, only potential. I'd no more pony up $25 for
any-old-random-work-of-IF than I'd pony up $25 for any-old-book or any-
old-DVD or any-old-videogame or any-old-music-CD.
It's gotta rock me. Unless, of course, it's aimed at you, instead

Okay? You mean, ethical? Morally defensible?
I paid for _Jack Toresal_, and I have experienced no feelings of
guilt or shame.

Since the USA, collectively, just spent $200,000,000 to see
Transformers 2, I am personally more than happy to pay $25 for a piece
of new IF.

Well, as others have pointed out, your question is phrased somewhat
ambiguously. Is it "okay" as in morally acceptable? No more or less
than buying any game, book, video, etc. Is it "okay" as in the
price? Depends on if the target audience thinks the game is worth
that much. Is it "okay" in how it will affect the IF community?
Well, it'd be great to get IF out to a larger audience. On the author
hand, we currently have authors turning out extraordinary quality work
(think Worlds Apart or Blue Lacuna) for free; I'd rather not have
things change to a situation where if you want quality IF, you have to
pay. I don't buy any computer games nowadays, so if IF went
commercial...

I paid $26 for a few drinks at a bar today. Jack Toresal would likely
give me more lasting pleasure.

No. Someone better contact Obama and alert him to this evil
profiteering. We need more regulation in IF!
I don't mean to be offensive here, but why is it any business of yours
what price someone wants to charge for their product? Are you aware that
it makes you look like a real busybody?

Well, seeing as he is part of the IF community, which I tend to think
makes up at least part of the market for commercial IF...
Potential customers have a right to be interested in the price of the
product, dontcha think?

If you're interpreting the OP as a potential customer being
"interested" in the price of the product, I want some of those drugs
you're hoarding.

I really wish google had a "rolling eyes" emoticon right now. I
never said the OP started this thread out of interest in purchasing
the product; I said that he is part of the IF community (this is
rec.games.INT-FICTION, correct? ) and therefore part of the target
audience. The comment I was responding to was NOT addressing whether
the OPs post was out of interest in the buying the product, it was a
statement that if you question why something costs a certain amount,
it is none of your beeswax and makes you look like a busybody.
And, before anyone brings it up, I'm aware that the IF community is
not the 'main' target audience. However, as threads advertising
Textfyre's products have been posted on the rec.*.int-fiction groups,
I think it's obvious that we are at least a small part of that
audience.

And I never said you did. As a point of novelty, I responded to what
you actually _did_ say.

I'm personally most excited about "Stiffy Makane: There's The Rub,"
and I think you made the right decision not doing the entire thing in
iambic pentameter.

I need to wait a few years on that one. I want to give Jacek at least a
few years in the sun with _Gamlet_ as the pinnacle of
transgressively-sexualized _Hamlet_-derivative Interactive Fiction.
