Post subject: [SH] Space Hulk Full review Archived from groups: rec>games>miniatures>warhammer (more info?)
I know I have been posting tid bits all day, but as my ex-girlfriends mom
(who was also hot) used to say, "Tough titty cried the Kitty, but the milks
still good!"
Buy this game. Buy it now before it disappears.Missions and rules are what
you would expect if you were an old time player, but the quality of
construction and the miniatures is superb. I, as a "man of leisure" do not
have a lot of money to spend right now, but I am happy to have spent this
$100. There are some spelling errors in the rules and mission books, but
easily interpreted and overlooked.
It is perfectly compatible with the "Space Hulk: Campaigns" book.
The mini's may seem strange at first but once you realize this is a true
collectors version I think you will understand why they are the way they
are.

Is this advice directed at new player/ purchasers?
'Vets' have been there, done that in 1st (and given away the models).
Imo, those new models would make nice 'statues' for board scenery.
But I expect Vets already have quite enough of those, too.
Since Vets need no more tiles, the only 3rd ed draw is Missions.
And they'd have to be SOME Missions to drop a C-note plus tax.
> Missions and rules are what you would expect
Sorry, I'm not tracking on this -
If we only 'expected' a reprint of an old game?
Because, that's what this Vet expected for 50-60 bucks.
Or 'if we expected a hundred bucks-worth of effort'?
Since, when I saw the price tag, that's what I've been waiting to
see.

Oh, I understand all that, it's the price tag that boggles.
Well that, and making all of the Marines Blood Angels.
The plastics ARE a tour-de-force for the die makers.
I just don't like 'em.
So, are there any *new* Missions included in the box?
Any mechanics that weren't in 1st or 2nd ed? ANY creativity?
Specifically, anything at all that might justify the inflated price
tag?
Maybe it's me, but I just don't see $100-worth of cardboard.

As a Vet who never bothered looking into SH when it was current
(although the first edition was still on sale when I started), it's
good enough for me - it even feels nostalgic without my having known
most of the rules beforehand. I'm not happy about the price, but I
like the game enough to have picked it up anyway (hey, it would
probably cost about the same for the full set on eBay, and it's
prettier this time around). Quite happy I did - I heard today from the
local shop that they've already run out of copies on mail order, so
only whatever stock gets released in shops on Saturday will be
available until/unless they do another run.

It's a reprint of an old game with better models and thicker
cardboard?

I like almost all the Termies - the only one I find weak is the one
holding a 'Stealer spine in one hand. The 'Stealers are okay as gaming
pieces, but not much as collectors' items.
> So, are there any *new* Missions included in the box?
Not unless any of the 12 are different from those in the original set.
> Any mechanics that weren't in 1st or 2nd ed? ANY creativity?
As far as I can gather from the design notes in WD, the only new
mechanic is the 'Guard' action, which allows Marines to reroll their
dice in close combat in the 'Stealer turn. Everything else is strictly
v1 (though sustained fire is allowed on overwatch - I think someone
here suggested it wasn't in v1).
What the designer's notes don't give is any rationale for this being a
limited release - they go on about wanting a stand-alone board game,
but Battle for Armageddon was on the shelves for three or four years,
why should this be different?

I respect the effort put into doing those remarkable dies.
It's just that, imo, the results are not enough to warrant the price.
Also, thicker card makes them incompatible with previous releases.
> I like almost all the Termies
Oh, I like them as playing pieces; they're fine in that role.
But the same could be said of the figs in the 1st and 2nd eds.
No matter how hideous the 1st ed Termis were, they made spiffy pawns.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is the only rationale for the
msrp -
A certain American one cent coin is "valued" at >US$1,000. Why?
Frisco only minted one half million of them - so it's RARE!
Only 500,000 collectors can claim to have one of THESE!
To the numismatically disinclined majority, it's worth a penny.

I'm not sure they'd warrant the price if they were made from solid
gold...

That much is plain, but their designer's notes is all "Hey cool! It's
a standalone game you can fork out for as well as all the other stuff
we've hooked you on!", and going on about it being a good thing that
they're doing board games again. It would be nice if this were more
than marketing bumph, and they saw the sense in producing occasional
one-offs that stick around.
Oh well, it's, what, three years until the Battle for Armageddon 20th
anniversary?

There were only 6 missions in the original game.
