Archived from groups: rec>games>int-fiction, others (more info?)

Several people have already emailed me to tell me that the SPAG
website is inaccessible.

SPAG has been living on an otherwise largely abandoned server for many
years now. It appears, though, that our gracious host did not renew
the domain name. I'm going to try to find out whether he is still able
and willing to do so. If not, I'll have to move the site to another
domain. I realize doing so would be a huge inconvenience for everyone
since so much links to SPAG (and this is in fact why I haven't done it
before), but it may be unavoidable at this point. One way or another,
I'll do everything I can to have SPAG back online within 24 hours.

Thanks for your patience,
Jimmy

Okay, folks, we are back up at the old domain.

Now might be a good time to ask, though: how much of a pain in
everybody's rear would it be if SPAG moved elsewhere? Is it possible
to do a batch search and replace on sites that link to SPAG
extensively, such as the IF Wiki, the IFDB, and Baf's Guide? I ask
because the current site lacks a database back-end, which limits --
nay, destroys -- my ability to add certain features like a comment
engine, a more refined system of searching reviews, etc.

Best,
Jimmy

But I don't own the domain name.

What's the feasibility of putting a html page at sparkynet.com/spag
that automatically redirects to the same file at a spag.com? Do that
after a few seconds with a notice that the site has moved. Then people
can go about changing links at the other major sites as they're able.

Yes, that's definitely the sort of approach I would take.

I'll throw my vote in for moving SPAG, if it means better reliability
and the ability to make the changes you would like to make.

Jimmy, I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the
awesome work you have been putting into this website. What a major
and longstanding effort. SPAG is iconic in the IF community. Three
cheers!

If you own the domain name, what does it matter? You can just move the
domain to another host.

Ditto.

When you control the content, other people will want to link to you, and
they'll update their bookmarks and links depending on how much they care
and/or how often they use the content. So if a link is broken on their
site is then their problem, not yours.

Totally move the site if you can do more or better things.

You can use a .htaccess file and redirect directly to another domain.

It's the best solution if you are on a APACHE server Smile If you have PHP
access, you can do it easily also.

Please read this (1 minute, copy/paste tutorial) page:

http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php

The best thing is that (and i quote):

"301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method
for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should
preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you
have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option.
The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently"."

ALSO, as already mentioned and talked about previouslly, i wouldn't mind
giving you space on my own hosting plan, i have a lot of space free
wasted there. NO BANDWIDTH problems, NO HARD DISK SPACE problems, if you
are still in need of a place to put your files, just let me know and
we'll figure something out, inclusively if you own a domain we can point
that to that server space. Of course FREE OF CHARGE Smile

Kind regards,
