Post subject: Skyrim: Balbas the dog

Do I really need Balbas the dog around to complete the Clavicus vile quest?
He doesn't seem to be trying to take me anywhere, and he keeps nudging me
toward the edges of cliffs. And I hate the barking.

Nope. I told him to stay at the shrine, got the axe(?) alone, went back,
everything fine.

You can also choose to not follow him and meet him at the statue.
