I'm wondering what the state of sound for current Mac interpreters is.
Are there any that can play the sounds for Lurking Horror?

I have the Masterpieces CD somewhere, but I'm not sure where it is. I
copied the story files onto my computer, but I don't know if I picked
up the sound files. Are they on the if archive?

Thanks!

Mikee

What is the sound in Lurking Horror like? I still haven't played it,
and am wondering if it would be worth the trouble to try to play it
with sound.

Thanks for the link. It turns out I do have the sounds from the
Masterpieces CD too.

So do any Mac interpreters do z3 sound? And what's the best way to
test if it's working - is there a point early on in the game where I
should expect to hear a sound?

ZIP Infinity for pre OS-X could. However, I haven't maintained it in just
about forever, and I don't remember if the OS X version ever supported
sound.

Not sure about Lurking.

Test Sherlock instead. Play the violin in Sherlock's room right at the
beginning.

Does anyone have more information on this? I couldn't figure out how
to associate the sound files with the game file in Spatterlight- does
it only work for glulx games that have sounds and game code in a
single file? Or can it work with .blb or another format of separate
sound file?

Let's see how Zip Infinity does...

Ok, trying Zip Infinity. I wasn't quite sure what version to get. I
got it from here:

http://www.russotto.net/zipinfv6.html

It opens in Classic. I thought Carbon didn't do that? But then I was
never quite sure what Carbon was.

Opening the game with the sound files in what I thought were
appropriate relative locations doesn't seem to cause any sound output.
Opening Lurking.blb produces an error (Fatal Error: wrong game or
version (PC=1))

Is there anything else I can try?

Ok, I forgot a step. I have release 203 so I need to patch it.

Now, I'm on a Mac, so I need to compile UPDATELH.C. No biggie, I
thought. I ran "gcc UPDATELH.C". Unfortunately, running this on my
version causes a checksum error. Maybe this is an endian problem? Are
there some command line switches, or maybe a 1 or 2 line patch that
will make UPDATELH.C work on a Mac?

Thanks for all the help,

Mike

I finally got some time to follow up on this. It works! Thanks for
everyone's help.

The sound itself is a bit disappointing, or at least the initial
chanting sound is, which is all I've heard. Is it supposed to loop? It
plays for about 2 seconds and then stops as suddenly as it started.

It's supposed to loop, and grow in volume as you proceed through the
scene. Or at least, that's what it does when I play it here.

It does grow in volume as I approach, but it doesn't loop. It just
plays once each time I get closer.

ZipV6Carbon is intended for the V6 games only. It's also abandoned.
(I ought to know, I abandoned it)

As far as I know, it's the only Mac interpreter that can play sound.
Am I wrong?
