Hi everybody!
Well ... the game I and many have been waiting for went live today,
December 20th. As a pre-order-er I have had a chance to play for almost
a week and I am very, very impressed.
This creation of Bioware is just mind-bogglingly big. It captured the
feel of Knights of the Old Republic and the ease of play of Neverwinter
Nights but with modern kick-ass visuals and sound. The force and
lightsabre combat is very well done and they don't just have basic
animations -- each type of action has multiple visuals that depend on
your foe's action. I find myself zooming in during combat just to enjoy
watching the 'dance' of blades.
I have played all eight classes to try them out and am pleased to find
that each of them is appealing. They all have their own story lines and
talents that keep them distinct. It wasn't easy to choose a class as my
main but I am going with a Sith warrior. Soloing seems very doable in
this game. I haven't grouped yet even though I am already in a guild.
There is almost no quest reading as it is all voiced and though there
are a few obvious "fetch the widget" missions there are also some clever
and creative tasks that feel very tailored to my character. As with
other Bioware games you also get to choose your responses to be the nice
guy or a jerk with dark side and light side points to be gained along
the way. Yes, you could play a light side Sith or a dark side Jedi.
The area transitions are seamless and smooth, the settings I've seen so
far are very nice. Companions aren't as clumsy or mindless as they were
in KotOR and they can even do crafting and sell off your junk loot. Idea
for someone like me who hates crafting in games like this.
The game launched exactly on time with no server issues though waiting
in queues is a bit of an issue right now. Surely this will stabilize as
they get a better handle on their player base.
For those who are fans of the Star Wars universe and Bioware's game
designs this is definitely worth a peek. And for the others: "I find
your lack of faith ... disturbing."

I only had the patience to poke around the site for a few minutes
looking for an answer to the first question I thought of: what are the
monthly fees? |

The game includes 30-days of play. After that it will be $15.00/month
sold in pre-paid 60-day packages for $29.99. There does not seem to be a
"lifetime" subscription.
"60-Day Pre-Paid Game Time Codes can be purchased at a number of video
game retailers or through Origin.com. At Origin.com, Pre-Paid Game Time
Codes are available in North America now and will be available in Europe
as soon as possible.
Suggested retail price for 60-Day Pre-Paid Game Time Codes are
$29.99/£18.99/€26.99."

This Dollar-to-Euro conversion is a little bit totally of the mark. $29.99 =
22.99 Euro even with today's weak Euro. I wonder who gets the shavings. |

Oh, tell me about it. When I pre-ordered the USD was only worth $0.95
CAD but us Canucks got to pay about $5.00 MORE than the Americans for
some reason.
That web page has been online for a while so I'm sure if you buy the
cards in Europe that the euro equivalent is closer to accurate.

I've been playing it since the 16th and I love it, at least so far. Playing as
a Jedi Sentinel an have been to 3 planets so far and done about two dozen
space missions as well.
The group missions are good fun, and the ability to change the course of a
conversation is a nice idea. Even a mission you have played before can play
out differently depending on the choices here. The crafting mechanic is a
clever way of letting people that normally hate that sort of thing have a go
if they wish and it means you don't get tied down too much and can participate
even when on other missions, which I make a lot of use of.
I've only managed to sell a couple of items on the galactic market aka Auction
House. Its probably too early yet for the economy to settle down, which leads
to things like level 7 items selling for the same price as level 2 items.
I can see myself playing this for a good few months at least if the missions
maintain the quality I have so far experienced. |

I watched a live stream of it; just lame. But then WoW looks bad
and people play that so TOR will make lots of money. |

Okay, just subscribed last night and saw the online prices. Pretty standard.
For a 90-day subscription it's $41.97 ($13.99/month).
For a 120-day subscription it's $77.94 ($12.99/month).

Oops. Yes I did. Good catch!
Too many Christmas cookies and chocolates have reduced my brain to mush.
