Post subject: Stowaways on the carpet Archived from groups: rec>games>computer>ultima>dragons (more info?)
I'm reading some interesting, and enterntaining stuff about U7 that
I found online (btw, the OS/2 Dosbox thing doesn't work with my
version of OS/2), and remembered something that irritated me earlier
today (well, yesterday, I'm just still awake); some guy standing on
the carpet that I didn't want to take along.
Maybe my fault for landing in the castle courtyard, but before I
have Mark and Recall, I'd rather not trust the drawbridge to not
disappear. (It once did, in a very long ago game.)
So, what happens if I take the stowaway along wherever I go? Will
the game croak, or just put them back where they belong once they're
out of my sight?
While I'm at it. I also read something about there being a spot on
Skara Brae where the carpet can land. If I ever knew it, I forgot
(and I'm very stubborn about finding spots - I always land in the
ruin in the swamp, too, to grab all treasure and then fly off).
Where is that spot?
Thanks.

I never had it crash from that but I didn't try to carry off the entire
castle population either. I expect it just moves them back when they're
off screen.

Actually, in at least one case I know it did not:
Trying to build up gold, I would fly down to Paws, load up on meat
(mutton?), fly to the castle, sell it to the old lady cook and
repeat. I got in the habit of landing just outside the butcher's
door.
One time, I completed the transaction and just as I double clicked the
carpet, the butcher ran out onto it. The carpet lifted him up and he
ran off onto his shop's roof!!
Wait as I might, he never came back onto the carpet for me to get him
down!! I flew to the castle, sold the meat, flew back and there he
still stood on his roof!!
I never did get him back down. Interestingly, the engine wouldn't let
you talk with someone at a different height than you, so I had to
gather crates for a stairway to climb up to buy more!!

Sounds vaguely familiar (with a different citizen probably, or maybe
myself?).
The servant I picked up in the castle just ran off once I'd landed
outside, and proceeded to turn on lights on the street. I didn't
want to see whether he would just go back inside, and reloaded, then
waited for him to stop his cigarette break on my carpet. <g>

LOL. At least that works.

If it is treasure you want, just fight through the easy part of
Despise a couple of times, you will roll in money.
Besides, there will be a time when you will not even need any more
money.
As for Skara Brae, why go there with the carpet? It is easy enough to
reach via Charon the Ferry man, what a merry man.

The point was getting the treasure that's there (though my memory
told of a bigger one than there actually was). Besides, fights tend
to be deadly, which is bothersome. And then all that blood...
Is there no price for resurrecting people? (Lots of people think
there should be - generally speaking, like in stories or other games
- not that I agree, but I wonder what might be lost or
substracted...)

Yeah. I like gathering the nifty things that are hidden all over the
place, though.

To land there with the carpet, of course.
