the no name game

Thanks to my ally, friends and enemies. I had a lot of fun. See you
in the next world.

Recently we played a long term game that had no name. It was a good
time. The Almighy POGO (All hail, praises be) set up the world for
us. Similar to some of his games in the past, the world was big,
there was a lot of buffer space and exploration to be done.

Some people jumped out early; the forces of darkness were all towards
the top of the power chart. They formed an axis of evil, forcing the
forces of light and what was good in the world to join together and
form an blood oath alliance for freedom - to the death.

Suddenly, the worm started to turn.

Our long term plans began paying dividends. They had short term goals
which turned out wrong for them.

We all started to encounter the enemies around the same time. There
was an island that my main foe had landed upon before me. It was too
close to the homeland. The generals all agreed that we had to take
and hold it at all costs. We launched the attack and stormed the
beaches. There was a small amount of resistance but our strategy
and tactics prevailed.

I'm pouring in troops.

Afterwards, we were uncertain about what would happen next. We had no
intelligence where the enemy was coming from and how close they were.
Our reinforcements were on the way. This island was Iwo Jima to us.

Low and behold, they appear with cruisers off the coast the next day.
We're quaking in our boots. The shelling commences. They were
raining death and doom all over us. We couldn't do anything except
dig the trenches deeper. A few kids from the mountains and the hills
also came of age and we sent them to help hold the beach too.

The High General said they will eventually run out of shells and
troops. Keep holding.

The assaults begin. Somehow we manage to hold the beaches. They did
not land a single troop on the sand. There is blood everywhere. If
they had assaulted 2 more times they might have been able to establish
a beachhead for a few minutes.

They leave. Our reinforcements arrive the next update. We have
established the place. At this point they had almost had no chance to
take it. They sailed some ships past, we opened fire and of course
they never came back.

The game continues. The forces of good keep expanding but the forces
of evil stop. It seemed that they were shook and had to start
consolidating instead of growing more.

We won the game mainly by natural growth and expansion while winning
key battles. My country and my allies were each easily almost as
powerful as the rest of them combined and put together. They never
reached 300 sectors and all of us have 600-700 later.

Each of us explored the entire world.

At another pt, I encountered my rival again. I landed on and explored
an island halfway across the world. He took it from me. This thing
was painful because he rolled me sector by sector and there was
nothing I could do to stop him. I had more ships on the way but he
had cruisers and destroyers. We decided it was better to not commit
suicide in a futile attempt. Let us consolidate this other island
instead. It was like wake island. Everyone died. We swore we would
return.

Time passes. Technology keeps rising. We are building a massive
invasion force while also consolidating everywhere. Because of the
size of the world and the fronts, you can't tell where you're going to
get hit until it's too late.

Our industrial strength was unmatchable. The forces of evil can't
even balance their budgets and are loaning each other a few dollars
every update because they're going broke.

I'm not sure what happened since I'm not in their countries but it
seemed to me that the enemies went into a complete turtle shell
defense. They were waiting to die.

Time passes. Now we're ready. We're coming for them and it's game
over.

Here's where I developed a new strategy I never thought of before. I
won't reveal it but the name of it is "bring 'em out."

We set sail. Probes and expeditionary forces go in first. (RL
ensues, I have to leave town and go visit home for a few days. My
raise's computer is too slow to wage war and my armada is sitting in
the water, exposed, off his coast. I can't even sleep at night
wondering what is going to happen).

We return. Now it's on. I hit them hard. They knock us off the
beaches, but he doesn't really realize what is happening.

We hit them hard again and start coming inland. He knocks us back to
the beaches. He still doesn't realize what is happening.

Now we come in again the 3rd time with the armada; boom, game over.
We're taking everything out. During this battle we completely
destroyed their armies and their will to fight. I gaurantee you he
was completely shocked. I didn't even have to shell him at all.

Meanwhile my ally was engaged in combat on the other side of the
world. He lost an island here or there but managed to gain it back
too. He also crushed them. At one pt is was funny; I built another
armada on that side of the world and started sailing to destroy the
enemy. Something told me to send in the subs first to have a looksee;
my ally had already taken it.

Our friend started to get bored. The enemy isn't fighting back
anymore. Again, they lost the will to fight. The game is pretty much
over. He said he wasn't even going to play anymore.

I learned something from my ally. I never used missiles and rockets
because I consider them to be an ungentlemanly style of warfare. I
don't believe in killing "innocent" civilians except for "collateral
damage." This is why I stopped winging a bakers' dozen of b52s
together unless it was absolutely necessary. That many blams is
almost illegal.

Everybody else is launching scores of missiles at their enemies every
update. Then I told myself there might be something to this missile
thing and mebbe I should start launching cruise missiles too. I
launched a few and it was fun.

You should have heard my ally. He's launching so many missiles he's
almost dietying the entire island. He can't find the enemy units; it
seems like he's hitting every sector with 10-20 cruise missiles at
least. Then he said, "man, I'm not sure if I can take the island or
not because I'm running out of missiles. I see he still has some
units left there."

I smashed the enemy using conventional warfare and he (my ally) asked
me what did you do? I told him. I was surprised he didn't know those
tactics. The enemy didn't have to ask me because he read the
bulletins.

My ally also was laughing at me for not building any happiness parks
when my citizens started revolting. Delivery walkouts everywhere and
strikes too.

The enemy mined his own waters thinking that would slow me down. We
chuckled and kept coming. I hit a mine and instantly know you have
another island close by.

He learned something from me and I also learned something from him. My
new tactics might be almost unbeatable.

It was fun fighting him.

Ciao,

Is that an invitation? I got a good server, decent internet access, ...
but no experience yet as POGO.

However I would enjoy hosting a game.

It would be a standard server. No special units. Nothing which can complicate
things.

I say do it - as a deity newb game - with people having that in mind -
maybe geared towards newb players? There aren't any games going now
anyway. Just set it up as vanilla Empire. Ask some experience deities if
needed. I've run the emp_server a few times - but never really hosted
anything public.

Ok,

1. Idea for the new game (follows below)
2. Call for players.
3. Actually running the game.

1. Game idea's

1a. Land war 2009.
Continental game with lots of plains instead of sea.
Some rivers, but limited use for ships.
Trains might actually be useful!

1b. Desert war 2009. Grab a map from Iraq, translate to an empire map.
server change: Change name from plains to desert.
Thema: Limited oil except in a few sectors.

1c. Island game, same specs as missilefest 2009.
I really enjoyed that game, and I would like to play in a similar game
again. (Read: I want to get someone to host such a game after this one
and I want to participate in that game as a player.)

This time with no (or significantly tuned down) missiles.

In all games I would go for tech log 3 (not 2), no free tech.
No fuel, no food, no RESPOP. GORENEW.
Less gold per bar or less gold. No easy bridges.
No nukes or DRNUKE (no RESPOP)...

First, I'll wait a bit for comments on this part.

I like the idea of 1a - never played in a non-island game
1b seems counter-intuitive - there should be LOTS of oil - but maybe
really low iron or gold or something

As for 1c, I suggest you don't deity a game type that you would rather
be playing. Very Happy

As I guy that has run just afew games in the past, I am really ashamed
of myself for not thinking of the idea below sooner. Really. I
should have in those hours pining to un-retire. But alas, RL requires
a RJ (Real Job).

Anyway, the game is setup with the standard islands with a few
expansion islands nearly baren of materials. Home islands have plenty
of iron, but not much gold or oil. No GORENEW.

the oceans of course are loaded with oil. You just need to get to it.

Now for the twist. Once you get the oil back to port, you can sell it
at the current market price to an "off-board" super power, rising
communist country, cheap dictator ship, etc. And the price per unit
of oil is based on how much oil was sold the previous update.

So you need to sell oil off-board to balance the budgets. That is an
important aspect in the game.

Now you are out there trying to protect your sloth slow oil derricks
while your neighbors are trying their best to sink them. Do you hold
the oil this update since the price is low? but you really need the
cash. And if you see your neighbor with a big glut of the gooey
stuff, do you go over and take some for your own use? Or do you just
sell all your oil and finance a new army and take them out the old
fashioned way?

It just adds a new twist to the game that we really haven't seen
before.

Hmmm, you could call it Twisted Mind 2009.

Why didn't I ever think of this?

Shameless top-posting ensues...

The oil market concept is interesting. To me it would be a side-
concept of the game but potentially fun as well. Subby told me one of
the reasons he stopped playing the empire was the elimination of the
market. (besides early chainsaw being very buggy and unbalanced with
the inception of land units)

I remember a game when he built 0 tech and just bought everything he
needed.

I play in any game I can, no matter what the terms/rules/mods are. If
it seems strange, I will learn a few things.

Every time I play and run a petty dictatorship, the world is the world
and that's the way it is. There used to be some mods that reasonable
people considered to be an abomination (like slow war, wtf was
that???), but again, that's the way it is. No man can question the
will and desires of the gods. Everything is done for a reason that we
may or may not be able to fathom.

I prefer games like the last no-name game. It was very balanced as
far as resources and land go. Gold is only in mountains. The 120
etus and mobility updating was strange. At first I thought it was
crazy. Then I realized how cool it was. I think the world should be
smaller, but bigger worlds are good because it means people get a
chance to thrive before they survive or die.

I never even had a real cap the entire game. We just had a bunker way
underneath that large piece of rock as our command center. The only
problem was that you had to build fleets or armadas and sail for
several updates like rl wars. One dude had the largest fleet I've
ever seen. I almost shat myself when I saw it on radar, thinking he
was coming for me. The ships scrolled off the screen, there were so
many.

It was in fire range so I opened up immediately. "Shoot first and ask
question later." Later he told me he was on his way to attack someone
else (ScreamSicle). He didn't even know I had an island near there.
The game was already over but at least I helped a friend by sending
80% of the enemy fleet to enjoy the hospitality of Davy Jones locker.

RIP to the only player/diety I know for a fact who is dead now. He
was a good man.

Ciao,
