No.
A lot of mods come as patch_d2.mpq files so you have to swap the MPQs
in and out, but Gemstone is a mod that can be run just by creating a
new shortcut to D2 with -direct -txt as parameters. That way there's
no file swapping involved, just the need to make a second D2
shortcut

Not that I know of, but that's whny you have two different shortcuts,
so you don't try to connect to BNet while running the mod
