On what OS are you running the above games? I just installed them to XP
last night and I can get Hannibal and Caesar to install but Alexander
won't install because it complains that I am not running Win95. WTF
idiot puts in a hook in the installer demanding the user has Win95?

Well, while most games once installed remain on the HD because I don't
see the point in de-installing them the list of games which get
installed by default from one pc to the next is pretty short :

- everything by Panther Games
- TOAW III - my vote for wargame of the decade
- Commander : Europe at War

You surprised me with a direct question Smile

At the time I typed it I *was* playing pong - email pong - it's a game
where you bounce emails back to its source until the other player
realizes he's not going to get you to do his work and quits bothering
you. At that point you score. I play it a lot at work Smile

Well, the main problem is minefields and vehicle breakdown/recovery,
both of which played a major part and cannot really be recreated in
the CotA engine.

That, and the additional water requirements of Italian units of
course Smile

I'm reading a book with dozens of interviews with Italian soldiers who
fought in North Africa. It put me in the mood for reinstalling CotA and
checking the new NA scenarios. "Panther Games' Afrika Korps" will never be
here fast enough. If there is a system born to recreate the mechanized
warfare in the desert it is CotA's.

Playing these under Windows XP. Installed using win95 compatibility mode.
Installed the latest official patches and
replaced the exes with the ones found on this site:
http://www.ianm1.plus.com/index.html

The above site is a very good resource for these games.

For my setup I also had to disable the 'Finish Leader Dialog' and the
'Confirm Group Command Dialog' under the preferences menu to prevent random
crashes. But once done these games work a treat!

What I'm mostly playing right now is Advanced Squad Leader. Not a computer
game, although I'm playing it online (on VASL), so maybe that still counts?

Occasionally I play some MTW2. I also have Battle for Wesnoth and
Drakensang on my HD, but that's about it.

Those guys had a great big setup at Spiel in Essen, looked great, but
I had the impression most players spend most of their time looking at
stat screens. Wrong impression or not ?

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Let's see:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1f/Drakensang_-_The_Dark_Ey...overart

Gnome: check.
Elf: check.
Paladin: check.
Dragon: check.
What else do we need on the cover ... a woman with enormous breasts: check.

Looks like this game has all the RPG bases covered.

When you see it all - and I don't mean just those breasts - on what
must have been a 30 inch monitor - georgeous stuff - you just wonder
why a gamer would want to spend the majority of his time looking at
stats.

I do spend a lot of time wandering around and looking at pretty
pictures. It isn't quite as enchanting as the first time I played EVE
Online or Morrowind, but it looks pretty good, although I also have the
feeling there's something off, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe
it's that Uncanny Valley thing.
